Water covers more than 70% of our planet - but less than 1% of the water on Earth is freshwater available to sustain all human and nonmarine life. In the United States alone, trillions of gallons of freshwater are being contaminated by hydraulic fracturing, agricultural pesticides, pharmaceutical waste and other industrial pollution. And as fracking-accelerated climate change causes sea levels to rise and runoff from melting snowcaps and glaciers to recede, even more our of vital potable drinking water supply is being lost. )( PEAK WATER IS NEAR. Peak Water is the point where demands for safe clean freshwater begin to exceed the combined abilities of nature and man to replenish and supply it. In many parts of the world, in particular in the dry, mid-latitudes, far more water is used than is available on an annual, renewable basis. Precipitation, snowmelt, and streamflow are no longer enough to supply the multiple, competing demands for societys water needs. Because the gap between supply and demand is routinely bridged with non-renewable groundwater, even more so during drought, groundwater supplies in some major aquifers will be depleted in a matter of decades.
