Pens: "RAIPUR: A Class VIII was forced to beg for money from his classmates and even juniors as a punishment for having forgotten to bring a pen to school at Ratanpur in Bilaspur district on Saturday. When it was seen that he was not taking notes, the 13-year-old boy was given a plate used for midday meals by his teacher Rajkumar Gupta and forced to beg for money. To add to his agony, he was asked to buy a pen from the collected money. The incident had disturbed the boy after which his parents complained to district education officer (DEO) R N Haridhar. The DEO immediately suspended the teacher, ordering a departmental inquiry into the incident. Such malpractices are common in rural Madhya Pradesh. Teachers are mostly unaware of human rights norms, and students are often abused. Psychologists say that it is due to such incidents that a student turns criminal. Instead of forcing him to beg for money, the teacher could have lent his pen or asked other students to lend theirs to the boy, said an expert on child behaviour. "
