People, I really recommend putting lots of effort into getting along with neighbours. When it comes down to it, they have to live next to you and you have to live next to them. It can be horrid coming home to somewhere where you feel tense about what is happening next door or where they feel tense about what you are doing. On one side, we live next door to people who had a horrid time with the previous occupants of our house. Needless to say we go out of our way to make them feel comfortable in their own home and its really easy because they are lovely anyhow! On the other side we have neighbours who campaigned for nearly 5 years to get permission to extend and improve their home due to opposition from a neighbour whose outlook will be much improved by the demolition of their eye-sore 60s flat roofed garage opposite her house. Yes its been noisy all summer, weve had the builders dog poop in the garden and our fence fell down when they took out some trees but we have chosen not to see it as a pain or inconvenience. We make the builders tea now and again and chat to them about progress, and they scoop the poop. We have a choice how to respond so we choose not to let it bother us and imagine how much better the place will look when it is finished and how much the family will enjoy using it. It is more important to us that we get on with our next door neighbours and we can put up with all the minor blips that can happen when we have work done to our houses. Who knows when we might want some tolerance from them while we do something noisy or disruptive? Relationships count more than temporary disruption. Once the noise and bricks and dust and all that is gone, the people will still be there. And so will we.
