People say Madison is a racist town. Personally Im more surprised when a person or a place isnt. Its not as if people want to be racist, they dont choose it, jut like they didnt choose to be born white or black or Chinese. It is instilled by those closest to them and through media portrayals, usually in subtle ways that if they were pointed out to be racists they would either be laughed off as simply a joke or a statistic and not an implication toward a race as a whole. It happens not so much with lynchings and cross burning, but more by people making offhand comments which become ingrained in developing minds. Therefore it isnt as simple a matter as just burning a racist person at the stake like a witch hunt, most people who are racist might not even realize it and often they are still good people otherwise. The things that affect a developing mind are incredibly difficult to reverse. If you think it would be easy to just point to facts and a racist person would simply change their mind, try convincing a woman that shes beautiful. As far as a solution, the only thing I can recommend is being a good person. Dont go around assuming anything bad that happens to you is a result of racism, that will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Its unlikely that you will change someones mind about an entire race or races, but you can change their mind about you.
