Perception, Limitation & Awareness: An acquaintance whose work I - TopicsExpress

Perception, Limitation & Awareness: An acquaintance whose work I greatly admire did an experiment that was interesting. With this experiment, he asked his participants who were seated to simply stand up and sit down a couple of times. Afterwards, he leaned in front of one person and placed his forearm on her shoulders and asked her to stand up. She said she couldn’t because he was pressing on her. He asked her if she remembered exactly what she did each time she stood up from the chair. He asked whether she leaned forward in order to get up, did she use her arms, etc. She couldn’t remember. He did the same thing to the next person. Her response was the same. He did the same exercise with a third person. He placed his forearm exactly the same as he had on the others and told her to stand up. She stood up without hesitation. He asked her why was it so easy for her to stand up, yet the others struggled to. She said, “I don’t know, I just stood up without thinking.” That was the key. Because he “seemed” to be pressing down on the others’ shoulders they perceived it do be difficult in their heads as they tried to get up. He was actually only pressing very lightly. The other woman never thought about the difficulty and simply stood up without giving it much thought. Question: How much do we actually limit and restrict ourselves mentally and physically based on what we perceive to be difficult? We probably do it far more than we realize. Also, the fact that the participants couldn’t remember what motions they used to stand up from a chair (which is something that we do daily), indicates a lack of awareness in regards to our bodily functions and movement. How much awareness do we actually apply to the things that we do? Something to think about….
