Perhaps not as grand as the Ludlow Estate but just as interesting, - TopicsExpress

Perhaps not as grand as the Ludlow Estate but just as interesting, heres a glimpse (courtesy of the June 26, 1891 Gloversville Daily Leader) of William K. Vanderbilts hens and the eagle he kept to scare off any predators. This article was written just before construction began on a huge brick hennery with incubator annex. In addition to the eagle bodyguard, the hens seem to have it pretty plush (until the dinner gong, that is). The author tells us: Over a meadow of fifty acres extent there comes to the nostrils of the Vanderbilt hens the pure breath of the salt sea, straight from Bermuda when the south wind blows, and as the front and top [of the hen houses] are of glass, the hens can lie in their hammocks and watch the clouds when tired of active exercise.
