Phone Call from Greg ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just spent an hour on the phone with Greg. Hes doing well, calling from a fast food restaurant, charging his phone. He expects to reach Carson City in the morning tomorrow, then will stay the day and overnight with a friend of one of his high school friends. Back on the road Tuesday morning and onto the Rt 50 segment that will be the road with longer stretches without services. Carrying two gallons of water, wanting to add a bladder on his back for this section. People do stop when he holds up the Need Water sign, and again I urged that he top off the first gallon and not wait until hes into the second one!! He comments on the how the weather has been fortunately not as hot as it could be. He notes how its so similar every day, with it clear in the morning then heavily clouded with occasional thunderstorms every afternoon. Had some hail yesterday. He mused about how its great to be able to talk again! Now when police slow down and ask him how hes doing, he can answer them, and they wave and go on. Before I had to reach for my notebook, run across the street ... They think Im deaf, then they find out Im not deaf Im just wasting their time so theyre annoyed with me... He was telling about meeting another cross-country walker and talking about equipment. Hes thinking about ways to lighten the load in the future. Hed love to do away with the backpack, or have a very light storable backpack to take out only when needed. Also maybe putting bigger wheels on the trailer, maybe semi-solid inner-tube replacements. The walk through Nevada, Utah, and Colorado will be the most demanding part of the whole 15+ months of walking. He sounds confident but at the same time perhaps (appropriately) anxious. He mentions that his route takes him right by the company that makes his tent: Big Agnus Tent Co.. He is using their Copper Spurt UL-1 model. He hopes to stop-in and get some parts. Needs poles, has leaks (but no, he didnt sound agreeable to just getting a new tent. 400 nights in a tent seems like a pretty good service life to me!) [If any of you folks are familiar with the Big Agnus Co., please feel free to contact them and share the story! Greg expects to reach there in a few weeks.] I commented on Gregs little video and how it ended with a car honking at it. He says that cars frequently honk just as they are passing. Not to warn him, or theyd honk earlier. He says they seem to try to honk exactly at they reach him, and sometimes it sounds as though the horn noise is half ahead and half behind me, and they especially do it if hes got his head under the black cloth of the camera to scare him! If folks are familiar with the Rt 50 stretch and have any information on additional rest areas, connections along the way -- anything that might be helpful -- please send me private messages and I will email info ahead to Greg.
