Photographers .... There seems to be some confusion going around about what a second shooter should be paid for their time. Let me just say this right here and now: A second shooter should never be making more than a primary. Also, a second shooter should sign a contract which discusses their role during the event, and how they will be handing over their images. In that contract is where their pay should be listed. Keep in mind a second shooter is not a partner. They are there as a second pair of eyes to aid the primary in getting different angles. Just because they supply their own equipment does NOT mean they are entitled to a higher rate. A second shooter is not the equivalent to a primary just because they might have their own business. I have second shot numerous times for many different photographers and while I enjoyed the experience I was also very aware that what I was there for wasnt to step on the primaries toes, or make decisions for them. If youre considering offering your time to be a second shooter please be aware that your pay is not going to be even remotely close to what a primary will make from the same wedding. You are entitled to anywhere from $10 to $25 per hour, and for what youre expected to offer that is well above what any part-time retail clerk or fast food worker will make for the same time spent at a job. Dont be greedy. Dont let your ego get in the way of having the opportunity to be part of something really incredible, in the way of working with another professional. There are more than enough hobbyists who would kill at the chance to even be considered to second shoot for a professional that would require no pay in return, just for the experience of shadowing someone. The primary shooter is also a business person who has spent more time doing marketing, consulting, and working out all the details than you will ever see. Enjoy being a second shooter, and being able to be part of an event with less stress and more creative leverage. I always enjoy being a second shooter!!! :)
