Pick an album, any album, and you cant go wrong. Jimmy Johnson is a modern blues master. He is largely ignored by the roots of rock crowd, (and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame). But he will never go unrecognized by me. I first saw him in 1980 at Tramps in New York City where he had a coming out party, (that went on for many weekends), for his new album at the time, Johnsons Whacks. (That record received a rave review from Rolling Stone, which wasnt known for rolling out the carpet for blues performers.) I saw him on subsequent occasions at that same club and at the Pocono Blues Festival. Mr. Johnson is the consummate professional. He is a great singer and guitar player with a sense of humor, (something that blues performers rarely get credit for). Jimmys version of songs such as Breaking Up Somebodys Home, Aint That Just Like A Woman, You Dont Know What Love Is, Happy Home and Look Over Yonderss Wall, (to name only a few); are definitive. His original material like The Twelve Bar Blues, (I got the twelve bar blues I been to ten or twelve bars tonight) and I Need Some Easy Money, are totally unique. If youre in the mood for something different, check it out. If youre looking for something great, go no further.
