Picked up these 2 old skillets and trivet at a swap meet many moons ago. Was soaking them in some weak lye solution in hopes it would strip them completely, but alas there is something black on them wont come off...maybe paint???? ...anyway, decided to stop putting it off and went to Rural King and found a 2 lb size of pure crystal Lye. Cleaned out my industrial type bucket, filled it with water, put in 8 oz of the Lye...yes I did it carefully and did it outside. By carefully I mean... I slowly added lye to water, then gently stirred (do not add water to lye, can have a caustic effect). Put in the skillets and trivet, put the lid on and I will check them in a few days in hopes the black whatever thats on them is gone.
