Pilgrims surge at Bermake Mahadev Dham PRADIP LOHAGUN, KALIMPONG, 4 Aug 2014: Today was the third Monday of the Monsoon season, and the number of pilgrims visiting the Bermake Dham in Kalimpong increased significantly. The holy Dham, which is believed to have manifested naturally, is mostly visited by Hindus during the monsoon season for the the Maha Shivratri Puja. Their innate belief is offering water to the idol of Lord Shiva at Bermake will make their wishes come true. Bermake, which falls under the Monsong Cinchona division where the Maha Dev Dham is said to have manifested itself naturally in the year 1984, reportedly draws around 20 ,000 to 30,000 pilgrims during the monsoon each year. Being the third Monday of the monsoon season, there was a huge queue of faithful lined up to offer holy water to Lord Shiva since at 4:00am in the morning till late in the evening. Apart from the three sub-divisions of Darjeeling along with Siliguri, Terai-Doars and Sikkim, there were pilgrims from various other parts of the country to take a view of the 2.5ft tall Shivalingam. Mahendra Rai, the President of ‘The Mahadev Dham Samity’, is hopeful of an increase in the number of pilgrims during the next monsoon. He said the Dham is being run by donations from pilgrims. Rai said if the concerned department could provide some financial assistance and promote the place, the Mahadev Dham in Bermake would certainly become a religious tourist attraction spot.
