Pink Floyd countdown #28: High Hopes is the last song on what we - TopicsExpress

Pink Floyd countdown #28: High Hopes is the last song on what we thought was the last album, The Division Bell. That record wasnt well received by the critics when new in 1994, but they are much kinder to it these days with the benefit of hindsight (hindsound?). David Gilmours eventual wife, Polly Samson, was settling into her role as the bands chief lyricist; their shared lyric on this song reflects on Pink Floyds early days in Cambridge. Gilmour frequently makes use of lap steel guitar for his solos. This version of High Hopes is special to me because I was in the audience at the Royal Festival Hall in London on June 22, 2001 when it was performed. This was Davids first solo concert since 1984 and his first live appearance in anything other than a guest role since the 1994 Division Bell tour. At the time, I was disappointed at the mostly acoustic nature of the show (check out the Comfortably Numb from the same gig to truly experience Pink Floyd Unplugged), but like initial critical reaction to The Division Bell, my opinion has favorably improved.
