Pinoy students bag 62 medals in 10th Int Math & Science Olympiad By: InterAksyon Filipinos hauled in 62 medals -- three gold, 18 silver and 41 bronze -- in the 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary School Students, which the Philippines hosted from November 25 to 29. The 10th IMSO was organized by the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines, led by Dr. Simon Chua, and Taguig City in cooperation with the Department of Education and the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology. The gold medals in math were won by Stefan Marcus Ong and Steven Reyes, both of St. Jude Catholic School, and John Henry Marquez of UP Integrated School, in a competition participated in by students from South Africa, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, India, Nigeria, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Malaysia. Xinyi Chen of Singapore emerged as the overall top scorer in Math while Master Papon Lapate of Thailand was best in exploration and Yu Chi Zhang of Singapore took home the best in theory award. In Science, Kar Weng Sean Leong of Singapore emerged the overall winner and Bowen Jiang of Singapore was best in experiment. Disanayaka Mudiyanselage Uvindu Praveen Sumanasekara of Sri Lanka was best in theory. Thailand took home 11 gold, 13 silver and three bronze medals while Singapore won eight gold and four silver medals. Sri Lanka bagged four gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals and Indonesia scooped three gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals. Taiwan bagged three silver and eight bronze medals while South Africa won two silver and 12 bronze medals. Malaysia grabbed two silver and five bronze medals while China and Kazakhstan won two bronze medals each. Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano and her husband Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, DOST-SEI officer-in-charge Elizabeth Fontanilla and MTG officers Dr. Isidro Aguilar, Dr. Eduardo Dela Cruz and Rechilda Villame led in awarding the winners on November 28 at the Samsung Hall of SM Aura Premier at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. The chairpersons of the jury were Prof. Arvie Ubarro for Science and Prof. Maria Luisa Villano for Math. The 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad was sponsored by PhilFlex Electrical Wires and Cables, Phoenix Publishing House, Petron, SM Supermalls, Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., San Miguel Corporation, Collins International Trading Corp., City of Taguig with the support of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and the municipality of Alfonso, Cavite.
