Pipe burst disrupts water supply to Durgapur Steel township, Durgapur Steel Township Reeling Under Water Scarcity: Water supply to the entire Durgapur Steel Township was disrupted from Monday after the main pipeline that carry water to the township bursts on Sunday morning. Though little quantities if water was supplied to some areas on Monday afternoon but major portions of the township remained without water on Tuesday. The main pipeline carrying potable water to the A-Zone, B-Zone and C-Zone locality of the Steel Township from the Water Treatment Plant of Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) got ruptured near Gandhi More of Durgapur on Sunday morning. Though the reason of the burst is not certain but unconfirmed sources said that local farmers might have intentionally caused the damage for irrigating water to their farmland. Though DSP authority took up the repair work on war-footing but normal water supply could not be restored even on Wednesday. When this report is being prepared, situation is far from being normal. After the repair work got completed on Tuesday afternoon, the main pump tripped frequently adding further woos to the residents of the Durgapur Steel Township. DSP management tried to arrange water tankers to give some relief to its employees residing at the company quarter in the Steel Township. But the effort virtually gave little relief to the people as the supply of water by means of water tankers water too inadequate considering the huge demand. The ward councillors of Durgapur Municipality Corporation that falls under the Durgapur Steel Township could not do much. Reports of water tankers meant for a particular locality being hijacked by residents of other locality also surfaced. Considering the importance of this lone pipeline that carries water to the entire Durgapur Steel Township, it would probably be a prudent idea to install a second bypass line so that situations like this can be averted.
