Pirates cont. A couple of weeks later I was outside playing and a car pulls up and stops in our alley. Bill gets out and has a baseball glove and ball and bat for me. He proceeds to teach me how to field a baseball and throw it to first base. the most amazing part of this lesson is that Mr. Mazeroski tells me he NEVER catches a baseball in his glove but lets the ball hit the glove and drop int his hand ready to throw. He practices with me for an hour or so. My uncle teases him about his abilities so Bill puts on a show. All the neighborhood children have gathered and they took turns throwing a rubber ball against the garage. It was the most amazing display of fielding I have ever seen. Not one ball got past Maz,,,it was like he stood on his head it was so acrobatic. he set up a first baseman and the ball would come off the wall like a rocket and Bill would field it and make a gentle toss that anyone could catch. It was like poetry in motion.
