Place: A dive burger and bar joint outside of Atlanta where Jimmy Carter declared that he would run for president. Event: Nine church administrators from large conservative Southern churches and one SoCal gay liberal pastor discussing the bill. Each administrator has a different way to do it. All of us are commanded to write down what we had and declare what we will pay and sign our names next to our amounts. Some include tax. Some include tip. Some do neither. The server is daunted by the process. A second round of discussion ensues involving a sub-committee of three that stands by the register with the server. The bill is sent back to us for revision and is passed around twice before I stand up and declare, "Let the idiot pastor figure out the bill" and I do. Feeling: Vindication. We ARE good for something after all. We are capable of finding solutions after others fail. This is an empowering seminar on several different levels. Hurrah.
