Planning Associate, Safety Net and Security Task Force, Caring Commission Overview of Caring Commission: UJA-Federation of New York’s Caring Commission fosters a thriving Jewish community that is caring, inspired, connected, and inclusive, one that enables its members to experience the warm embrace of the Jewish community in times of personal and communal crisis as well as during critical life-cycle junctures. It undertakes community assessment, strategic planning, and grant allocations in a broad array of health and human-service delivery in the Jewish community in New York, in Israel, and the former Soviet Union. Areas include the issues of the aging population, Holocaust survivors, poverty, mental health and wellbeing in youth and families, autism, Jewish spiritual care, health, and end-of-life care. Through a diverse portfolio of initiatives totaling $20 million annually, the Caring Commission helps ensure that Jewish communal institutions are equipped to respond to the vast array of challenges affecting all Jews in need, whether chronically vulnerable or needy. The work of the Caring Commission represents the commitment of more than 100 volunteer leaders across six task forces working alongside select professionals within UJA-Federation’s network of agencies. Position Summary: The planning associate will be responsible for staffing the Safety Net and Security Task Force as well as other related projects within the commission. The agenda of the task force focuses on developing and implementing initiatives that meet the basic, life-sustaining needs of the community’s most vulnerable through funding an array of service and community-building interventions. Major Responsibilities: 1. Manage core content areas related to safety-net services, including: • Ongoing analysis of data and trends related to Jewish poverty; • The creation and development of new initiatives to respond to Jewish poverty; • Building and sustaining relationships with key organizational and communal partners, including through gatherings and site visits; • Grants management; • Continued learning that is necessary for securing and maintaining expertise in the area of Jewish poverty; • Working very closely with lay leadership through organizing regular task force meetings and briefings. 2. Develop strategic papers related to Jewish poverty. 3. Develop RFPs when unmet community needs are determined and funds are available. 4. Ongoing communication with task force chairs to ensure that meeting agendas and documents are provided well in advance. 5. Organize Excel charts and summary reports for grant initiatives. 6. Work with program coordinator to ensure that all funds are accounted for and grant letters are accurately disseminated. 7. Act as main contact for grantee organizations when questions arise, especially during grant renewal season. 8. Work with UJA-Federation development professionals to educate donors and possible task force members in issue areas. Includes: • Working closely with professionals in the annual campaign and special projects, capital gifts, and foundation relations; • Responding to requests from colleagues in marketing and communications regarding outcome-based statistics and vignettes of grant allocations. 9. Ad hoc projects as needed, including researching unmet community needs and planning conferences for network agency professionals. Experience/Competencies: • M.S.W. or related degree in nonprofit management, Jewish communal service, or related field, with at least three years of experience in the field. • Strong knowledge of UJA-Federation and its network of agencies. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • The ideal candidate is a creative strategic thinker and thought leader who is able to balance many priorities with impeccable organizational skills. • Strong interpersonal skills along with passion and energy. • The work environment demands flexibility and a good sense of humor as well as the ability to relentlessly focus on the task at hand and work as part of a team or independently. • Pursues appropriate and necessary learning activities for securing and maintaining expertise in the area of Jewish poverty. • Ability to negotiate between big picture and smaller details, appropriately prioritizing tasks while keeping budgetary information organized. • Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
