Plans are afoot to charge 5p for carrier bags. So get into the habit of taking your own along when you go shopping (we rubbish geeks would do that anyway, of course - or even we shoppers who use the supermarket of the year, cos they dont give you any anyway!). The Deputy Prime Minister, Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP, commented that ‘we’ve waited too long for action’ and he wants large retailers to donate the money collected from the bag charge to environmental charities - like they have done in Wales since 2011. The charge, which should start in Autumn 2015 (these things take time, you cant rush the cogs of government), will not cover biodegradable plastic bags, as long as they meet a new standard to be introduced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Biodegradable bags are interesting, I wonder how long they last...
