Plea in SC seeks postponement of J&K Assembly Elections New Delhi: The Supreme Court was on Friday urged by a political party to postpone the upcoming Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference filed a petition in the apex court, urging it to postpone the elections in J&K till the time rehabilitation work is over in the flood-hit state. The SC bench said that the plea of Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference be placed before the court of Chief Justice today itself. The bench of CJI is hearing another matter related to the rehabilitation work and hence this case be also sent before that court, the court said. The development came shortly the Election Commission informed the SC that the Model Code of Conduct imposed in the state will not come in the way of relief and rehabilitation work. The EC told the court that it has already issued a communication to the Central government and the Jammu and Kashmir government that the election code of conduct will not come in the way in the relief and rehabilitation of the flood-devastated people of the state. The poll panel said this to an apex court bench headed by CJI HL Dattu which had asked it to state whether the enforcement of code of conduct came in the way of the relief and rehabilitation work. Five-phase elections in J&K begin on November 25 with the last phase being held on December 20 The counting will take place three days later.
