Please Join in on my virtual Birthday Hill-Moretti Casserole Supper! Though I live in a big city with many strangers, I am part of a community here, part of a neighborhood called Tribeca, a part of the greater New York City. And during-post college, I was part of the arts community of Tampa, FL. And for a few years inbetween, Florence and Sassari, Italy. But where I first learned the essence of community, was from growing up in a small town – Franklin, New Hampshire. When a family was in dire need, say from a fire, people got together and put on a casserole supper. The town would come together with their baked dishes at the high school cafeteria to raise funds for a good cause. Such fundraisers were not only a great way to help, they brought a whole town, a community of friends, neighbors and families - young and old - together! Those values have stuck with me. They demonstrated the goodness in humanity. Well today, that family is my family. Though we can’t all sit down at a long table to share a delicious meal together, we can virtually come together. Today is MY BIRTHDAY. I am FIFTY. And for the time being, without a home. Despite, I am, grateful. I have a whole life ahead of me! I am also grateful that my family, Marco, Lorenzo and our pug Fiona are safe and well, and that no one was hurt in the fire last week. I am grateful to have so many friends and a wonderful family and extended family. So today, I celebrate being alive and healthy. Though we lost a bunch of stuff, stuff can be replaced. But we do need a home and do need to rebuild our lives. AND because we didn’t have insurance (I know, how STUPID!), replacing only the essentials is our current challenge. So, for my birthday, I WISH FOR A NEW BEGINNING FOR ME AND FOR MY FAMILY. This is where YOU, MY COMMUNITY come in... Marco needs to replace his computer so he can get back to work. I need to replace my laptop and with that start a new career. Lorenzo needs a bed, a dresser and a desk. We need to find a NEW HOME. We need to pack and move - all combined is our challenge. As much as I truly don’t want to be reaching out for financial help, unfortunately, we need it. We will gladly accept whatever contributions our community has. The old adage, nothing is too small is SO TRUE. REALLY. I would gladly take your casseroles and hugs too. A few of my awesome friends set up a fundraiser site for us. GoFundMe.
