Please find below press release from North Devon Council: Could you help care for the Cairn? A local conservation group in Ilfracombe is looking for more volunteers to help care for the Cairn. The Cairn Conservation Carers is a group of local people who look after an historic woodland area on the southern outskirts of Ilfracombe. The Cairn is about 15 acres of mixed woodland and grassland, with Cairn Top standing approximately 520ft above sea level. The group meets every two weeks on a Sunday (weather permitting) and spends the morning on a range of tasks including tree planting, path improvements, meadow management and scrub clearance. Paths and benches were first installed at the Cairn Pleasure Ground in 1893 and it was once a very popular area. Over the last century maintenance steadily declined, but in 2001 the Cairn Conservation Carers was established. The groups main aim is to improve biodiversity and to clear, maintain and improve the pathways, making it more accessible to the public. North Devon Councils Parks team has supported the group over the years. Executive Member for Parks, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Derrick Spear, says: The Cairn is a really interesting area to explore and the views from the top are magnificent. The Carers do an excellent job keeping the paths clear and encouraging wildlife in the woodland. This sounds like a very rewarding opportunity to meet some like-minded people on a worthwhile mission! The Carers meet at the Roundhouse, Cairn Road at 10am and work together for about three hours. The next volunteer day is on Sunday 20 July. For more information about getting involved with the Cairn Conservation Carers please contact Mike Jones at North Devon Council on 01271 388326 or email [email protected].
