Please help my dear friend, Little Annie. Heres the foreword I penned for her riveting memoir, You Cant Sing The Blues While Drinking Milk: The last time I saw her perform she broke her shoe just before taking the stage. This did not throw her in the slightest. She simply endeavored to tape it up with silver duct tape and when that didn’t work, kicked it off and sang barefoot. It was a stylish shoe ( Betsey Johnson no less ) but it was broken. Little Annie is somewhat like that shoe. Stylish in a way that hearkens back to a long lost era of hot jazz, speakeasies, crystal champagne flutes and chandelle feather boas. She is broken in a way that makes her all the more beautiful. Her songs are broken and beautiful too. Achingly poignant elegies for the marginal. Down-at-heel transvestites, saintly hookers, street hustlers, outsider artists and vagabonds on the lam. With a voice that sounds like it’s been smoked over hell fire and marinaded in whiskey since Prohibition, this tough little sparrow of a woman, her eyes too big for her face and her heart too big for the world is simply the greatest living female torch singer on the planet, bar none.
