Michael Chunyk Updates on Seth Machak There was an elderly woman at the soup kitchen yesterday. She was evicted from her apartment and had her mother with her who was quite ill. She had nowhere else to turn so she came into the soup kitchen as a last resort looking for help. She could have been my mother, your mother, anyones mother. She was terrified of having to sleep in her car, and rightfully so. We spent all day trying to find her a place for the night. No one would help because she didnt have small children. I even called the mayor and asked him for help. Finally, we gathered our resources with Elms College to put her up at a motel until Monday when she could talk to someone about housing. I thought of Seth and what he would do. It was this not-so-random act that teaches us what it means to be human; to have true compassion when it has no possibility of benefiting yourself. We did this to honor Seth and to remember that, after all, we are still human.
