Please remember that doctors are human also; if something - TopicsExpress

Please remember that doctors are human also; if something doesn’t seem right, always ask questions. I went to the dentist back in April because a tooth started to break apart. The dentist drilled a cavity on that tooth along with a couple other teeth that I wasnt even aware needed work until after x-rays. Amongst all the work, she forgot to fill the cavity that I originally came in for., Mainly due to my dental phobia and super busy schedule, I have been babying it for the last 6 months. Today, after several calls from their office and recent increasing pain, I made the decision to go in and have it finally fixed since it has been bothering me more and more. (Need I mention again I have a healthy fear of dentists?!?) I was a walk in; they accepted me roughly 40 minutes before closing. I heard a front staff member tell another patient that they always take people until 5:30pm and sometimes can be in the office until 10pm finishing up. I waited quietly reading my textbook. They called me back to a treatment room, I explain the reason for my visit and continued to read my text book. The first dentist came in, I re-explained my issue. She did an examination and couldn’t find what I was talking about. She blamed the recessed rough area on plaque build up. I insisted she recheck to find the cavity that needed to be filled. She had her pick in the cavity and was causing me pain from jiggling it about and still claimed she couldnt find the issue. She then had her senior dentist come in and examine me. He walked in with chest puffed out and touted his 28 years experience; put his pick in the cavity and jiggled it about claiming not to be able to find it. He acted as if I was crazy and was just another Flint prescription drug seeking fool. All the while, I was trying to be patient and respectful; trying my best to explain to them how to find the cavity that they were placing their pick in and claimed they couldn’t find. I explain to him I was not a stupid person; that I had 8 years experience in the medical field to which he promptly corrected me that I knew nothing in the dental field. He blamed it on a dental pocket and an over correction of the filling on the biting surface of the tooth. I tried to explain that not only did she drill and fill a cavity from the biting surface, but there was also one along the gum line that needed to be filled. He wanted to send me on my way, tears flowing from the excess pain they both created from jamming and manipulating a pick in the cavity that they claimed wasn’t there. That is when I asked for an x-ray. After 2 x-rays, they still couldn’t find what I was talking about. That it when the dentist started to get an attitude with me. I knew I wasn’t crazy, I knew there was a cavity that needed to be filled. After 30 minutes of poking and prodding by 2 dentists and being treated like a fool, I asked if I could see his little mirror so I could show him exactly what I was talking about. Three seconds later, after I put the mirror in the correct place, he exclaimed, “Oh, that’s a class 5.” - “Okay, what is that since I am not a dental assistant.” He stated, “Oh, it a cavity, you just were not explaining it to us correctly so we could find it.” He then started to order directions to his male assistant to prep materials and he shoved a swap of topical anesthetic in my mouth. I apologized for not being able to more adequately tell him how to find this relatively large cavity. He then turned to me and asked. “Do you know what time we close?” (It was currently 8:20 pm. I arrived around 5:20, the last walk-in was accepted at 5:30pm and the office closed at 6pm.) He stated, “We close at 6pm. Do you know where I live? I live in Detroit and I have an hour commute!” It was at that very moment that I decided I was not going to allow this man to practice angry dentistry on me and got up and left. He kinda gasped in disbelief that I had the nerve to walk away from him.
