The prayer vigil and rally is being held to raise awareness for the need of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and to move Arizona forward in ratifying the ERA. Swanson has been traveling on foot across the United States from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA, since Saturday, March 8, 2014. She expects to arrive in the nation’s capital one year later on Sunday, March 8, 2015, to speak at an Equal Rights Amendment rally on the steps of the U.S. Capitol and then take the participants’ demand for full equality to the White House. Swanson will walk through all the 15 states, which have not yet ratified the ERA to the U.S. Constitution. She is hosted by: churches, organizations, and folks she meets along her route. She often rests along side the road. She visits with each state’s leaders and local community organizations asking for their support for ratification, and encourages bipartisan cooperation. She will also be asking our nation’s leaders to co-sponsor resolutions moving through the U.S. House and Senate that call for the ratification of the ERA. The 15 non-ratifying states, in the order Swanson will walk through them, are Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. The prayer vigil and rally is organized by Katrinas Dream, Democracy for America, National Organization for Women (NOW), Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), The Occupy Foundation, UniteWomen.org, We Are Women, and Women-Matter.org Swanson, an aspirant for the priesthood of the Church of North India, cofounded Katrina’s Dream in memory of her late mother-in-law, the Rev. Katrina Martha Van Alstyne Welles Swanson. Katrina was one of the 11 women irregularly ordained to the priesthood in 1974, becoming the U.S. Episcopal Church’s first female priests. When the ERA failed to be ratified by the necessary 38 states, Katrina began to recite the Pledge of Allegiance “with Liberty and Justice for SOME!” When questioned “Why ‘some”? she would reply, “Because the ERA was voted down, retired women are more likely to live in poverty than men.” Katrina’s Dream is active in prison law reform, education in Botswana, promoting the rights of Christians in India, and the full inclusion of women in all areas of life. On March 8, 2011, citing support from Katrina’s Dream, Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) chose International Women’s Day to introduce legislation to speed ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution. [Please see instituteforscienceandhumanvalues/articles/Baldwin%20seeks%20to%20ratify%20ERA.htm In 2012, Helene Swanson walked close to 600 miles from the Women’s Rights National History Park in Seneca Falls, NY, to Washington, DC, to bring attention to the joint resolution sponsored by Baldwin and Senator Ben Cardin (D=MD) that calls for the removal of the deadline imposed by the 92nd Congress on the Equal Rights Amendment.
