Please stayed tuned to your local TV and radio for the latest weather updates. From the National Weather Service in Little Rock Sunday, February 2, 2014, 11:30 AM By late this afternoon, snow should be falling roughly along and north of a line from Mena to Conway to Blytheville. South of this line, a band of freezing rain and sleet about one to two counties wide should be occurring, with a cold rain farther south. After dark, the area of snow should gradually enlarge to encompass about the northern two-thirds of Arkansas. A relatively narrow band of freezing rain and sleet will be south of that, with a cold rain in south Arkansas. As the evening goes along, precipitation will gradually diminish, with the bulk of the precipitation shifting off to the east. After midnight, precipitation should be lingering only in the east, and even this will exit the state before sunrise Monday. Please refer to the map at srh.noaa.gov/lzk to see the latest warnings and advisories. At the top of the Web page, above the radar map, click on the tab marked Winter Weather Today to see expected snowfall accumulations. Ice accruals will be less than 0.10 inch in most cases, but a few places in the higher terrain could pick up as much as 0.20 to 0.25 inch. Temperatures in west central, central, and east central Arkansas will be dropping into the 20s overnight. Where wind does not help to dry the pavement, there will be icy places on the roads on Monday morning. Obviously, with more precipitation expected in the northern part of the state, the biggest road problems will be there. The next round of winter weather will begin late Monday night and continue into Tuesday. To start out, freezing rain and sleet should cover about the northern half of Arkansas. Warmer air will gradually turn most of the ice over to rain. By the middle of Tuesday afternoon, any wintry precipitation will probably linger only in the northern couple of rows of counties in northwest and north central Arkansas. At this point, it appears that some ice accruals around 1/4 inch could occur in north central Arkansas. Needless to say, with freezing rain and sleet forecast, a round of hazardous driving conditions will occur over the northern half of the state. There will be another winter weather system late in the week, sometime between Thursday night and Saturday. Timing and precipitation types are very uncertain at this time. However, I think it is safe to say that there will be hazardous driving conditions at least in northern Arkansas, and possibly in central Arkansas as well. I will issue the next message on Monday morning. John Robinson Warning Coordination Meteorologist National Weather Service, Little Rock
