Please take a moment to remember legendary lawman Eliot Ness (April 19, 1903 – May 16, 1957). From Wikipedia: [He] was an American Prohibition agent, famous for his efforts to enforce Prohibition in Chicago, Illinois, and the leader of a legendary team of law enforcement agents nicknamed The Untouchables. Ness was safety director of Cleveland and the time of the infamous Cleveland Torso Murders. Though the crimes were officially unsolved, theres little doubt in my mind that Ness identified the killer. The murderer was Dr. Francis E. Sweeney, a member of a well-connected Cleveland family. The wealthy and powerful of Cleveland have always been protected by the local media and the city government. Sweeney voluntarily entered institutionalized care and the murders stopped. From his confinement, Sweeney would send mocking letters and postcards to Ness. Max Allan Collins wrote a series of novels of Ness in Cleveland. They are terrific books and well worth seeking out: The Dark City (1987) Butchers Dozen (1988) Bullet Proof (1989) Murder by the Numbers (1993)
