Pliant is the bamboo I am a man of earth They say that from the bamboo We had our first birth This is the first stanza from the poem Man of Earth written by Amador Daguio back in 1932. I Iearn this poem when I was in senior high school more than 30 years ago during our Literature class. This poem illustrates that the Filipinos came out of the bamboo tree when a mythical bird pecked the bamboo and out came Malakas and Maganda. I still remember this poem through out the years because it represents the indomitable spirit of the Filipino People. The Filipinos, like the bamboo tree is very pliant. When a strong gusts of wind blows through it, it just bends and sways with the force of the wind. After that, it goes back up again standing erect. The Filipinos are a very resilient people. no matter what comes our way, we just brush it off and just keeps moving forward. Our deep faith in God also helps us through all the tragedies that we have experienced. I pray to God to please give our people the strength, the will and the spirit to overcome what has befallen upon them.
