Poem by someone who recently went to Haiti with me. Through my eyes at Haiti Sitting in traffic theres horns honking and people bustling, with somber and cheerless faces. Heavy baskets upon their heads, constantly walking to sell their wares. Sweating brows and tired bare feet, worn clothing and broken dreams. Living amongst rubble piles, waste mounds, earthquake ruins, and abandoned homes. Muddy water, littered streams, and broken roads. Theres roosters crowing and muffled music. Motorcycles and wheel barrows too. Barbed wire barriers and talk iron gates. Graffiti sprayed buildings and brick piles. Theres a stink of diesel car exhaust in the air and the stench of the burning trash. A mother hen and her baby chicks walking near the starving listless dogs. Both just looking for a morsel to eat. Tied up goats and hungry cows. Yet they live amongst so much beauty. Theres bright fruits that line the sidewalks and colorful hand paintings that line walls. The sight of the mountains can be seen all around. The beauty of the blue Caribbean ocean nearby. Theres green tropical fruit trees and plants. Flowing flowers cascading down the city walls and beautifully painted murals. Brightly colored tap taps on the road with multicolored umbrellas that line the streets. This is their life. This is all they know. -Anonymous
