Police Officers’ Widows Get Support, Call For Chibok Girls Release The future, livelihood, overall well-being of the widows and children of Police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty are priorities for the Police Officers Wives Association, POWA. The Anambra State branch of the organization, led by the wife of the State Commissioner of Police and Chairperson of the group, Mrs. Asabe Gwary, organized a welfare programme where items worth thousands of Naira were distributed to over 60 widows. The women used the opportunity to call for the release of the abducted Chibok girls while discountenancing the notion that Police officers do not live up to their responsibilities of securing lives and property in the country. The wife of the Commissioner said that POWA as an organization was lending its voice to the clamor for the safe return of the Chibok girls whose abduction for over 60 days have kept the nation in suspense. The gathering was not only for material gains as the women received words of encouragement on the ways to conduct their lives as widows to promote the integrity of women generally. The widows were presented with food items, toiletries and clothing materials while being urged to strive hard to take up better means of livelihood which would assist them in taking care of their children. As the occasion called for joy, the women, at least for the moment, danced and appreciated the gesture which would indeed support their welfare. It is on record, however, that in 2013 alone, 1,585 policemen were killed in the line of duty, either in the hands of bandits or in the hands of political and religious extremists. The untold stories of the loss, the pain and the despair still lie with their widows and children and they simply need help.
