Police officer petitions IGP over assault by Oyo LG boss A police officer, Inspector Olorundare Salawu, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba, demanding justice over assault on his person by a caretaker chairman of Ibarapa Central Local Government in Oyo State, Mr Bola Olawoore. A copy of the petition, signed by Inspector Salawu, was made available to Crime & Security. Salawu, in the petition, alleged that Olawoore, slapped him on August 29 while he was discharging his official duties of protecting lives and properties. Salawu, in the petition copied to the police authorities in the council, other security agencies and the council boss himself, explained that the incident happened on August 23 during the voter registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He said that he received a call from Agbomi Daniel, a police officer with registration number F/No 3/0288-CPL covering Idere ward III, located at Islamic Primary School, that there was crisis. Salawu said on getting to the scene, “I was informed that some politicians had mobilised students of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education in Lanlate area of the state to register in the ward at the detriment of the natives. “One of the students, Odedele Victor, a native of Oyo, was apprehended, while the people were about to mob him but we took him to the station for further interrogation. “Suddenly, the council boss, Olawoore, emerged and blocked the police patrol vehicle with his car ordering the police to release the student not minding the presence of the DCO, who tried to explain the situation to him. “The council boss, however, resurfaced at the station with a member of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), Ajibi Tiamiyu, while the duo forcefully released the boy. He (Olawoore) slapped me and Agbomi Daniel and removed our berets. “The incident occurred in the presence of the DCO, Mr Mathew Folorunsho, the council’s SSS officer,’’ he said. Salawu said that the DPO, SP. Hassan Khahi; Chief Kingsley Oyelami, the Onidere of Idere and an All Progressives’ Congress (APC) party leader, Chief Silas Lasunsi, had pleaded with him but wanted justice to take its course. “I therefore request the IGP to use his good office to protect my interest in bringing the culprits to book, in order to serve as deterrent to others and encourage police officers in the discharge of their duties.’’
