Policeman Kills Self, Wife, 5 Others In Ogun Segun Olatunji— Tragedy struck on Thursday at Akingbala area of Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ogun State when a police corporal identified as Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi went berserk and shot dead his wife Corporal Oluwatosin Faremi, a commercial motorcyclist and five other members of a family, before turning on himself. Reports said Ogunbiyi had arrived at Number 67, Ifelodun Street, Akingbala residence of the family of five, who had allegedly been harbouring his wife and his two children at about 7:02am and immediately opened fire, killing his wife and the commercial motorcyclist identified as Kunle. Residents said that Ogunbiyi had, in the past, issued several warnings to Iya Basira (the landlady who always harboured his family) to desist from harbouring his wife and children whenever they had any misunderstanding. But she was said to have turned deaf ears to the police man’s warnings. Ogunbiyi was said to have laid wait in a nearby bush in the early hours of Thursday, only to emerge when a motorcyclist turned up at the front of the house to take his wife and children to work and school, respectively. He shot dead the motorist and his wife, but spared the children. He stormed into the six-room apartment, where he killed Iya Basira, her two-year-old daughter Jesutofunmi, her two sons Taofeek (a senior secondary school student) and Sikiru; before turning the gun on himself. The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, was said to have visited the scene of the shooting to assess the situation. The state police public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, said that Ogunbiyi and his wife had been having domestic misunderstandings before the unfortunate incident. He also said that the command had already commenced a thorough forensic investigation into the killing and assured that “justice will be done in the matter”. A statement released by Adejobi read, in part: “The Ogun State Police Command has deemed it necessary to react to the killing of six persons by a police Corporal Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi attached to the Ogun State Police Command, this morning, Thursday, 27th March, 2014 at 0758hrs when the said corporal, who had been having domestic conflicts with his wife, shot and killed six persons – his wife, Woman Corporal Oluwatosin Faremi, the landlady, a two-year-old baby girl and two males and one female, while another three persons sustained injuries and [are] receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta.” Adejobi said CP Ikemefuna Okoye has described the incident as unfortunate and has visited the scene with other senior police officers in the command to assess the situation and sympathise with the relations of the deceased and members of the Akingbala Ifelodun Estate, Eleweran Area, Abeokuta, where the incident took place.
