Political parties are trying to flare up communal clash in Barak valley. BJPs Cachar district unit called for a 12 hour bandh in the district (assamtribune/scripts/detailsnew.asp?id=oct1914/state055) claiming to protest against rising crimes against women and deteriorating law and order situation in the valley. But their main grievance appears to be arrest of Rajesh Das, District President of BJPs Yuva Morcha by the Cachar police. He was arrested in connection with the attack on the ambulance carrying Faizul Karim, a teacher and accused of molesting a college student in Karimganj on the night of Thursday at Karimganj and also at National Highway point. However, after a lot of argument and counter argument Rajesh was released later. The incidents involving Fazlul Karim generated lot of tension and unrest throughout the valley. According to reports, he was attacked on 16 October at his residence in Karimganj allegedly for not paying a demanded amount of money as voluntary contribution towards Kalipuja. At the intervention of his landlord tthe attackers went away at the time only to return with a larger group. This time there was one of his girl student with her father who was claiming that she was molested by her teacher on 13 October. The raiding party bashed up the teacher injuring him seriously. When police arrived a complaint if outraging the modesty of the girl by the teacher was given to them. None of the attackers were arrested by the police. But they took the injured teacher accused into their custody and brought him to the district civil hospital. In view of the seriousness of wounds the doctors at the hospital referred their patient to the Silchar Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, when the news of the teacher being beaten up reached, his students and villagers gathered at Nilambazar and tried to block the national high way there in protest against what they said brutal attack on their teacher and filing of false case of molestation. On the other hand, another group of mob allegedly led by Rajesh Das attacked the ambulance which was carrying the teacher in Silchar on its way to Silchar Medical College. They were bashing up all passengers of the ambulance causing serious injuries to many till police came and rescued them. All the injured were hospitalised. There were much speculations and rumour-mongering about the incident which generated tension throughout the valley. The administration issued prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC. Some leading people from both the communities issued appeal for peace and calm. ( bit.ly/1rOfwZU) There are reasonable objections raised by many regarding veracity of different versions of the events unfolded so far. Many claiming that the allegations of molestations are cooked up to harass the teacher while others claiming that the allegations of extortion bid is false and made up to shield the accused of molestation. The entire episode indicates that there are desperate efforts to stir up communal hatred, polarise people on communal lines.
