Politicians and academics at a discussion in the capital on Saturday urged the formulation of a welfare state and reforms in the constitution so that it could fulfil people’s aspirations. The constitution that was framed after the war of independence in 1971 could not fulfil aspirations of people, they said. Loka Dal and Samaj Chinta Forum organised the discussion, ‘Aspirations of the war of independence, the people’s state and constitution,’ at Pragati Sammalan Kendra at the office of the Communist Party of Bangladesh. Ranjan Dash, a leader of Loka Dal, read out the keynote paper at the programme where he called on all political parties outside the influence of the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to be united to wage a movement for the formation of a people’s state and a new constitution that could fulfil aspirations of people. He proposed a bicameral parliament with an upper and a lower house so that all sections of people could be represented in the parliament. Freedom fighter SIM Nurunnabi Khan said that the country was facing a political crisis as ‘we have failed to form a welfare state 43 years after the war of independence.’ He called on all left and democratic political parties to be united to formulate a welfare state and a constitution. Left politician Samsuzzoha Manik called on left and democratic political parties to be united to form an alternative political force. Loka Dal president Mozzammel Hossain Shamim presided over the programme. Academics Shiekh Baten, M Rashid and Samaj Chinta Forum convener Kamal Hossain Badal, among others, spoke.
