Pooky Yesterday, I received a text from April (my ex) that Pooky - TopicsExpress

Pooky Yesterday, I received a text from April (my ex) that Pooky (a cocker, corgi mix) was winging her way to puppy heaven. This news weighed heavily on me since I had been a part of her life for the most of it. I love dogs and though I have my selection of favorite breeds (pit bull terriers being #1), I instantly fell in love with this dog. It took two to three weeks for Pooky to get use to me and another month or two for her to stop barking at me as I approached the door. This was during the time that April and I was starting to date. It was nice to see Pooky finally just wag her little nub of a tail so hard that it would literally shake her bum. Then she flops on her back, exposing tummy for me, April, and Margie (April’s mother) to give her tummy rubbers (rubbing her tummy). When Margie would come over, Pooky would run and slide to her and immediately flip over on to her back making it seemed that she had slid on back for that treat. As cute as she was, she did have one trait that bothered me; she would get so excited that she would pee on the floor, a cocker trait. I got use to that and day by day I started to feel as if it was just another day in my life. The corgi part had her taking off down the street at times if we were not careful to keep an eye on her. She loved chasing cats and squirrels and one of funniest moments came a month or so after April and I was married. We were sitting at the table working on a puzzle when we noticed an orange and white cat go inside the garage and then come back walk behind it. Now of we knew that Pooky would never harm the cat since she was more bark than bite. We called her to us and uttered the words; “Pooky, cat.” She perked up those small floppy ears, went outside and waited since she sensed something was amiss. The cat not knowing Pooky on high alert emerged from behind the garage and without barking as she usually does took off like a linebacker smelling the blood of a quarterback. The cat didn’t know what hit her and I believe Pooky was just as surprised as the cat as both went tumbling over. April and I laughed so hard we couldn’t even concentrate on the puzzle. Another time that made me laugh, but also had me catch the evil eye of April was when I forgot to take the door off of the doggie door and she ran right into it. She usually ran inside every time April would come home for lunch or after work. The expression on Pooky’s face told me that; “Hey! you forgot something.” There were other times that she made us all laugh, especially taking her for walks around the block or to grandma’s apartment (Margie’s place) when we all would walk to have family dinner. Though she got older and slower, she was still cute and loveable as ever. She did mellower as the years went by, even going so far as not even caring about presence of the mail carrier walking up the steps. It is still hard to believe that she is gone, yet she is. I felt that she had a few good years left in her, I was wrong. I will miss her very much; though I know she is in a better place. I will miss the time that she chased two big dogs out of the back yard by nipping at their legs. I had heard the yelping and I thought that it was Pooky that being attacked and hurt. To my surprise, all I saw was Pooky running around and sniffing at the ground. I was told later by April what had actually happened. She feisty and seemed to take on all comers, though cats became a problem for her. She had a cat cornered and didn’t know what to do. That made me laugh and I will miss that l that the most.
