Poor political choice blamed for rising food prices 1 in 4 South Africans go to bed hungry, which is now the worst food crisis in our countries history. The PACSA food price Barometer has blamed Government incompetence, poor political choice and the rapidly declining agriculture sector as a crisis in our country. The average food basket increased from R 1100.00 in 2013 to R1 600.00 in 2014, making food unaffordable for an increasing poor sector of society. Most low income and pensioners are cutting out bread and meat from their diet as they simply cannot afford it.
