Popquiz! I asked my students to pull out a blank piece of paper and write down a poem. Any poem. As much of any poem they could remember. I was going to teach them how to do plunderverse, but was caught off guard with what my class of 60 3rd year English students wrote down on the paper. 1 student had scattered lines from Flanders Fields, 1 student had a couplet from Frost (author not identified), a third of the class wrote down lyrics to Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Drake songs, another third wrote down advertising jingles, and the rest wrote nothing. Is this the mark of externalized memory or total disinterest in literature (even from lit students)? Do you have a poem stored in your internal memory?
