Port Canaveral Emergency Repairs Florida based Beyel Bothers Crane and Rigging has been contracted by Port Canaveral to remove the underwater hazard of a concrete ‘dolphin’ mooring, walkway and pilings. This underwater hazard was created when a tug and scow belonging to a company doing dredging work in the ports channel collided with the structure in daylight. While no injuries were reported The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the accident and the port is open to commercial boat traffic. Damage to Pier Number 3 will only affect the larger fuel vessels that require the ‘dolphin’ mooring to secure their bow lines. Until the new pier is rebuilt, tug boats will be used to hold the vessel’s bow in place when large cruise ships pass or during other emergency situations. Beyel Brothers spokesman Steve Beyel stated that his company ‘has divers in the water accessing the damage and the main body of concrete structure will need to be cut into smaller pieces before they can be lifted. This could take a week or more to complete.’ So far the damage estimate is one million dollars and does not include rebuilding the pier which could add a few months to the project.
