Position Announcement: PhD Fellow at Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (TPH) Jul 02, 2013 PhD project at Swiss TPH on how school vegetable gardens contribute to improved nutrition and health of school children and the particular interaction with water, sanitation and hygiene is seeking a Phd Fellow. Company: Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute Workplace: Asia, Switzerland, Africa Field work: Asia (Nepal, Bhutan) and Africa (Burkina Faso, Tanzania) Description: The PhD thesis will be embedded in a larger project framework entitled “Vegetables Go to School: Improving Nutrition through Agricultural Diversification”. The project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by the following partner institutions: (i) World Vegetable Centre (AVRDC); (ii) University of Freiburg; and (iii) Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). The objective of the project is to address malnutrition among children through a comprehensive school vegetable garden program in Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Nepal and Tanzania. Within the partnership described above, Swiss TPH will cover the following aspects: Conduct a minimum of three detailed case studies of pilot schools in three different countries to have a better understanding of possible synergies between school vegetable gardens and health, water, sanitation and hygiene at the school, household and community level. Provide detailed recommendations on how school garden programs can best exploit synergies between health, water, sanitation and hygiene at school, household and community level, which should contribute to best-practice strategies for scaling-up school vegetable gardens. Swiss TPH is seeking for a PhD student who will contribute to close the knowledge gaps related to effects of school gardening programmes on health of children by conducting and supporting research in the interface of nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene and public health. The PhD student is expected to work closely with another project research fellow (co-supervised by AVRDC and Swiss TPH) who will be based in Taiwan and with the partners of other research components and the local partners in the project countries. The PhD student will be hosted in the Ecosystem Health Sciences Unit, and Ecosystem services, Climate and Health research groupat the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health of Swiss TPH. He will be registered at the University of Basel. The PhD project will entail desktop work, research study design and implementation of field studies of selected countries. Education: This multi- and interdisciplinary project requires good qualifications and interest in the fields of human biology, epidemiology and/or public health and the ability and willingness to work on nutrition, and waterand sanitation-related health issues in developing countries. Excellent written and spoken English is required; other languages (i.e., French) would be an additional advantage. Furthermore, the ability to work in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams is of importance. Candidates from Nepal with an MSc in epidemiology and public health with a background in life sciences, sanitary engineering and/or environmental sciences are particularly encouraged to send in their application.
