Post no one will read... One chapter into THINK LIKE A FREAK. (3rd installment from Dubner & Levitts best selling books, Freakonomics series). Disappointed. They drew reasonable conclusions about others studies and surveys about the past. Its quite another thing to forecast the future and make decisions that others are charged and responsible to do. In this book, they talk about setting aside a moral compass in regard to speaking about past policy. But ultimately, true public servants try to steer society for the greater good. Its easy to pull on cliches that they did not quote, but spirited... Like those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it. In their first two books, they claimed that they were merely quantifying results of policy/market decisions, and not making judgement of how things should be. In this book, they go a step outside of their depth and start to editorialize. Reminds me of my favorite quote by Theodore Roosevelt. I wont bore you with it all, but look it up. It begins with, it is not the critic that counts... They got smug about their exchange with then soon to be prime minister of England. They breezed over some of the real differences between the economies of health care verses transportation. They ignored morality. They were intellectually lazy in delving into the economic moral decisions most make between the two. Free cars are not the same as free life support. People in politics and business struggle with those concepts daily. It is easier for those in academia, (who mostly only judge the past and dont really personally risk the future of others) and the media, who mostly look for opportunities to criticize. If you want to be a true public servant, what should we do? Being an advisor lacks accountability. The buck stops with the boss. People with a moral compass is what gave us something to evaluate in the first place. Im Sorry, but you guys sound like a couple precocious teenagers who got to the dance and blew it. Im still a fan. If it were me , Id kick right at the goalie every time.
