Post of the Week- Use of business cards by job seekers. What to include! As job seekers, using business cards can seem a little far fetched. But in fact these, when prepared right, can be advantageous. You could be out somewhere without your usual job search portfolio and meet up with someone who may have a lead which they need to contact you later. Unless there is a pen and paper handy, it is hard to share this information easily (unless you have a smartphone as well). But business cards can help bring forward your personal brand. Some may rather call them personal cards or Calling cards. Lets look at what to include when preparing one. Creativity and expressive- Keeping in mind you are the company the product and the brand, you want to be able to put the best foot forward to show who and what you are able to give. For the most part keep it relatively simple, but include the right information to push yourself forward in the receivers mind. Use a descriptive title- There is the option to have one or not. As someone unemployed you could use something that focuses on the strength of the skills you have and not towards any one organization. For example use, Experienced advertising executive rather than XX company advertising executive. Use the title that best can describe you and your strengths. Use of social media- Ensure that you are using at least one social media source on your cards and be sure that it is one that reflects your professional image you want to display to prospective employers. You could have several professional accounts, but ensure that one can tie into the others to get the most exposure. Dont leave out the key aspects- Even though you have the social media information listed, dont forget to include the standard contact means (phone, e-mail and address). Ensure that your privacy security is set to the right level to avoid any inappropriate information coming your way. Neat and tidy- While you are free to use your own creativity when preparing the business card, remember you want something that is easy to read and neat and tidy. Keep the colours and number of font styles to a minimum. Separate accounts- If you have certain aspects of your life you dont want people to know, create accounts that are strictly for professional use. You can then share these with prospective employers and the information remains focused on the professional image you want to convey. Distribution of these cards should be focused on employers as well as to prospective contacts who can help you find the work you are seeking. By offering a card, it demonstrates your desire to work or reach your goal.
