Posted: Thursday, March 27, 2014 12:00 am The Galveston Daily news, Letters to the Editor, By BILL YOUNG I wanted to share more about the exciting vision I have for Galveston County. My previous letter was about getting us an airport terminal in Galveston. Next, I want to revisit the Texas Legislature about the gambling issue. This has been a hot topic for some time and is not without controversy. In reality, we already have gambling here on every corner. Just visit the corner store and you’ll see the sales counter filled with dozens of scratch-off games. In the past, the approach to asking the legislators to approve statewide gaming was a taboo subject. It made them uneasy with their constituents. I say we take a different, more toned-down approach. I want to ask the Legislature not to approve statewide gambling but to just exempt Galveston Island from the 12-mile rule regarding gaming enforcement. Everyone knows that when you cruise offshore, the casino opens at 12 miles. With Galveston Island casinos generating huge tax dollars, I’ll ask the state to designate the tax for the Texas windstorm fund. In short, you legislators want us here on the coast to pay the windstorm bill. Here’s one solution — allow us gaming. Bill Young Independent candidate, county judge
