Practice pointer: Dont let the lunatics run the asylum! Once you - TopicsExpress

Practice pointer: Dont let the lunatics run the asylum! Once you recommend a course of care, DO NOT let a client negotiate you down from this. I cannot stress this enough. If you say that someone needs to see you twice a week for 2 weeks and they try to reduce it to once a fortnight, be clear, yet firm with them. If you fold and give in to their demands, youve lost all credibility and future communications will be strained. Im not saying that you shouldnt be flexible, just be clear with communicating the goal of your recommendations. Heres a suggested script (sorry, I hate scripts as much as the next person, so modify it to suit you while keeping the message clear): Joe, I understand that youre (too busy, short of cash, etc) to come in when I said, but Im making this recommendation to get you better as quickly as possible. Youll probably still make improvements, but you may be prolonging your pain. Research shows that the longer people live with pain the harder it is to make a complete recovery, but its your call. In this instance, youre presenting them with facts while validating their reasons. Its not that people cant afford/have time for your care, its that they dont put their health high enough on their priority list! You can change that.
