Praising Allah: Narrated Abdullah ibn umar radiAllahu anhu; the prophet sallallahu alyhi wa sallam said: "there are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these 10 days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel (laa ilaha illaAllah), takbir (Allahu akbar) and Tahmeed (alhamdulillah) [Ahmad 7/224, this narration is sahih]. It is sunnah to recite this in the masaajid, at home, the street (if possible) and every other permitted place. It should be recited individually and not in unison as that has no basis in the sharia and is an innovation. The sacrifice of one not performing hajj: Hady- a legal edible animal brought to masjid al haram , slaughtered there and sacrificed for Allah the most High Udhiyah- a legal edible animal slaughtered and sacrificed on the day of an nahar (Eid) or days of tashriq (11, 12 & 13th dhul hijjah). "We have appointed a rite (of sacrifice) that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided for them..." (Al hajj 22:34). "And whoever honours the the rites of Allah- indeed it is from the piety of the hearts" (Al hajj 22:32). So the for the one who intends to fulfill this sunnah not going hajj; the optimum time to perform it is from after the eid prayer until the last days of tashriq. It is impermissible to slaughter an animal before it reaches the prescribed age for being slaughtered. Which is six months for a sheep, five years for a camel, two years for a cow and one year for a goat. "When it is the begging of dhul hijjah and anyone of you intends to offer a sacrificial animal, he should not get any of his hair cut or nails trimmed until he offers it" [Muslim 3173, 5/71]. In the scenario when one does, one must seek forgiveness but there is no obligation to offer anything in expiation. And with Allah is success.
