Prayer Point: Shane and Patty Jelsma were brutally honest about their relationship when they arrived in Alaska for a week of marriage enrichment through Operation Heal Our Patriots. “We’ve gotten to that point where it’s do or die,” Patty said. Shane is a Marine sergeant, specializing in explosive ordinance disposal. Over the course of his eight-year career, which has included deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, he’s been exposed to more blasts than he can remember. Though he may appear fine at first glance, the explosions left Shane with a traumatic brain injury. He now has memory issues as well as trouble with communication, prioritizing tasks, and making decisions. Before arriving in Alaska, Shane and Patty were already believers. But while they each had faith, they didn’t feel that they had built their marriage on a shared foundation in Christ. Through five days of marriage enrichment classes, our staff chaplains, both of whom are retired military, helped the Jelsmas learn how to communicate, work through their issues, and draw closer together as they keep Jesus at the center of their relationship. On Friday they stood hand in hand on the shores on Lake Clark and recommitted themselves to each other in a public vow renewal ceremony. “This has helped our marriage tremendously,” Shane said. “It was a huge boost.” Please pray that Shane and Patty will continue to build on their shared foundation of faith. Also for God to continue to heal the relationships of all the military couples involved in Operation Heal Our Patriots.
