“Pre-Crime” is a concept that was the focus of the movie Minority Report. Now, a new software program, allowing for predictive policing, may be coming to a police department near you. “Beware”, made by telecommunications company Intrado, searches billions of records to find and predict potential crimes. What is most alarming about this software is that it will not only scour records and databases for info on suspects, but it will also pull info from social network pages and look for words that could be deemed as “offensive”. The program then uses that information to assign a threat level to a suspect. The obvious downside to this is a computer can not assess the level of intent regarding the comments of an individual. In a recent documentary I watched entitled, Inside The Dark Web,” this very subject was addressed. The NSA, for example, receives millions of google searches tied to IP addresses everyday. One IP Address the film documented had Google searches that included such queries as how to murder your wife, the perfect crime and how to get away with murder. Seems pretty suspicious right? The problem, however, is that the IP Address belonged to an author who writes criminal novels and was working on a novel where a husband murders his wife. With pre-crime computer programs and the legalization of indefinite detention without due process via article 1021 of the National Defense Authorization Act recently signed by President Obama (in spite of the fact that its a constitutional violation), its no longer a stretch to expect that the movie/sci-fi novel Minority Report is coming true.
