Pre-emptively culling sharks is not only unethical, it just doesnt - TopicsExpress

Pre-emptively culling sharks is not only unethical, it just doesnt work. Theres no scientific evidence that it does. On top of which Great Whites are a threatened species. Despite these factors, and even the public opposition to the policy the Liberals in WA have pushed ahead with the cull. This is basically in line with everything The Liberals do - make emotive irrational decisions based on fear - its appeal to peoples worse nature, the primal parts of us that dont know better. Irrational fear of sharks is at least a statistically more realistic fear than homophobia or fear of refugees, but they all stem from the same xenophobic part of human nature which is easily cultivated in people who arent open to conflicting data and act from a place of impulse rather than reason. Sharks kill less people per year than vending machines. Or dogs. They certainly attack a lot less people than dogs, although admittedly they probably attack more people than vending machines. Theres not much hope for the sharks which will die under this policy, but theres something to be learned about why the conservative response to things scary on a cultural rather than primal level usually doesnt make sense.
