Pre xmas boat security post: now is the time of the year when many - TopicsExpress

Pre xmas boat security post: now is the time of the year when many boaters abandon ship to go and see their families. Its also a time of year when some of us might suffer break ins (us included - we had an attempted one xmas eve). Lines of obviously empty boats can be very tempting to opportunists. So. What can you do? Dont leave anything onboard that you cannot afford to lose. Think about where you will leave your boat - try to moor near boats that will be occupied over the holidays, double moor them with friends who may be in, avoid mooring your boat away from other boats, or in quiet lonely places where anyone breaking in will not be seen. Avoid leaving your boat adjacent to footbridges in very quiet areas, because this may be used as a quick getaway. Are your locks strong enough? Are your padlocks or whatever they are attached to are feeble enough to tempt thieves to break in with bolt croppers? Can you conceal the fact you are away by leaving lights on? A few strings of solar lights or low energy LED inside the boat behind curtains can make it look like someone is home. Any more suggestions please post in this thread.
