The review from todays Portsmouth News. Delightful play is tinged with sadness Performed by HumDrum, this is a play of light and shadow. Based on the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim and set in the years following the First World War, Enchanted April gently evoked the themes of love and loss and allowed its characters to ‘bridge the awkward gap between their many befores and afters’. Director Sam Sampson restricted his cast to the front of the stage for the first half, effectively conveying the claustrophobic atmosphere of post-war Hampstead, and created warm, vibrant, positive Italy by giving them room to move in the second. This talented cast gave us some well-defined characters, but, for me, Caz Gilmore, playing the central role of Lotty Wilton, made the play come alive. This delightful play has a happy ending, but tinged with just enough sorrow and loss to stop it feeling schmaltzy. It also has some laughs, and the bath scene (very well played by James George) will have me chuckling for many days to come. It runs until tomorrow. Julie Rich
