Premise # 2 The major reason for improved health is political empowerment. Prior to the 40s infant mortality and life expectancy in the U.S. was not much better than elsewhere in the world. With public health projects associated with a. clean water, b. hygiene, and c. immunizations matters were dramatically changed. The research and documentation by Ivan Illich as documented in the landmark book "Medical Nemesis" showed that time, proper diet and rest were all luxuries of persons with some level of control over their lives. He even warned about the over reliance of antibiotics that work well in the well nourished but did not assist poorly nourished patients. He felt antibiotics got the credit for the ending of plagues when in fact they were in decline prior to the breakthrough of antibiotics. This partly started the shift from a public health system to an Individual Delivery System and loss of a "economy of scale" benefit.
